The annual innovation gala The National Swedish Award for Innovation in Memory of Alfred Nobel was held in Stockholm on November 10. This year’s award was received by Dr Tongyun Shen, R&D director of Nelson Seed Development. The diploma was presented by Håkan Lantz, prominent Swedish innovator of international renown.
The award was established in 1986. Its receiver is awarded approx. 50 000 Euro and can rightfully claim the unofficial title Champion of Swedish Innovation.
Dr Shen was granted this award for her development of a patented method for seed enhancement, Vitalization. It is a type of priming producing seeds with faster and more uniform germination and excellent storability in comparison with traditional priming.
Since this method is fully ecological and has the potential to reduce the need for transports, it is also a valuable addition to the global pursuit of methods for sustainable food production.
“It is indeed a great honour for Dr Shen that her groundbreaking research is brought to attention and that her resilient effort is recognized this way. We see this award as an acknowledgment of both the technological ingenuity and the potential market impact of Vitalization”, says Torsten Nilsson, CEO and main owner of Nelson Seed Development.
The SKAPA Award winner is selected by a jury. Since each region in Sweden nominates its most qualified candidate, the competition for the award is hard indeed. Also, the association with the name Alfred Nobel indicates the high technological standards expected from the regional nominees.
